T h e s e include an occasionally different order for some of the poems, early versions of six of them, the absence of others (most noticeably, again, the final poem of the volume), and the presence of thirteen poems later omitted (including one not r e a d at Vancouver). So it is clear that modifications continued to take place in the volume at this stage as well. All of the changes outlined h e r e reveal the prolonged deliberation out of which the p o e m was constructed, the artful putting together of things "which h a d not previously / fit" (II, 157), until the desired sweep of vision was achieved.
